Panel Upgrades

If your home still has an older electrical panel, there is a good chance it is working harder than it was ever designed to. Today’s homes use more power than ever before. HVAC systems, kitchen appliances, EV chargers, home offices, hot tubs, and smart home devices all add demand. At McKAM Electric, we provide panel upgrades to improve safety, increase electrical capacity, and give your home a stronger, more reliable power system.

A panel upgrade is more than just swapping out a box on the wall. Your electrical panel is the main hub that distributes power throughout your home. When that panel is outdated, undersized, damaged, or overloaded, it can lead to tripped breakers, flickering lights, limited room for new circuits, and in some cases serious fire and shock hazards. We upgrade panels so your electrical system can safely support the way you live today.

When a Panel Upgrade Makes Sense

Many homeowners call us because they are adding new equipment and need more power. Others contact us because they are seeing warning signs that the panel is no longer performing the way it should. Common reasons to consider an electrical panel upgrade include:

  • Frequent breaker trips
  • Lights that dim or flicker when appliances turn on
  • An outdated fuse box
  • A panel that is full with no space for added circuits
  • Burn marks, corrosion, buzzing, or heat at the panel
  • Home renovations, room additions, or major appliance upgrades
  • Installing an EV charger, hot tub, workshop equipment, or new HVAC system
  • Service capacity that is too small for modern electrical loads

If your home has a 60-amp or 100-amp service, you may be running close to the limit. Many newer homes and upgraded systems benefit from 150-amp or 200-amp service, depending on the load calculation and the property’s needs. We assess the full electrical demand of the home and recommend the right solution instead of guessing.

What Our Panel Upgrade Service Includes

We start by inspecting the existing electrical service, panel condition, grounding and bonding, circuit layout, and overall load requirements. From there, we explain what the system can handle now, where the risks are, and what type of upgrade will best support your home and future plans.

Our panel upgrade service may include:

  • Replacement of an outdated or unsafe electrical panel
  • Upgrading the main service disconnect
  • Increasing amperage capacity when needed
  • Installing new breakers and properly labeling circuits
  • Adding space for future circuits and expansion
  • Correcting grounding and bonding issues
  • Replacing damaged, loose, or worn electrical components
  • Coordinating permit and inspection requirements as needed

Every home is different, so the exact scope depends on the age of the property, the service size, utility requirements, and the condition of the existing wiring. Our goal is always the same: deliver a clean, code-compliant installation that improves safety and gives you dependable power.

Safety and Code Compliance

Electrical panel work is not a job to cut corners on. A poorly installed panel can create hidden hazards that affect the whole home. At McKAM Electric, all work is completed by state licensed electricians and is compliant with the current National Electric Code and standards. We take the time to make sure connections are secure, breakers are matched correctly, grounding is handled properly, and the system is set up for safe operation.

We also stand behind our work. Every panel upgrade we complete is warrantied for 365 days from the date performed. That gives our customers extra peace of mind that the job was done right.

Benefits of Upgrading Your Electrical Panel

A professionally upgraded panel does more than solve immediate problems. It can make your entire electrical system safer, more efficient, and more practical for daily life.

  • Improved electrical safety
  • More capacity for modern appliances and electronics
  • Reduced risk of overloads and nuisance breaker trips
  • Room to add circuits for future upgrades
  • Better support for remodeling projects
  • More reliable power distribution throughout the home
  • Increased confidence in the condition of your electrical system

If you are planning a kitchen remodel, adding a garage subpanel, installing a car charger, or replacing major mechanical systems, a panel upgrade often becomes the foundation for the rest of the project. Getting the service capacity right at the start helps avoid delays and expensive changes later.

Older Panels and Electrical Concerns

In many older homes, the main panel may not meet current needs or current safety expectations. Some older panels may have known reliability issues, while others simply do not offer enough amperage or breaker space. If your panel is decades old, it is worth having it evaluated. Signs like rust, a burnt smell, crackling sounds, or breakers that will not reset should be addressed right away.

We help homeowners understand whether they need a full replacement, a service upgrade, added circuits, or another electrical solution. We believe in clear recommendations based on the condition of the system and your goals for the home.

This company provides excellent service. Robby and Nate completed several repairs and installs for me. I appreciate how efficiently they worked, and cleanup was thorough which is a big plus. I will use their services again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

Robby and Alec were both very nice and professional electricians. They installed lights with dimmers in my entertainment center and hutch where the interiors were recently painted black. They installed the hutch lights so the shadows fall behind my cherished pieces, making my things stand out and look beautiful. They installed a smart timer in the hutch so I don’t have to worry about turning the lights on or off. I’m very pleased with their knowledge and the job they did. Want to mention I had a budget amount in mind when I called them for a bid. Their bid was higher than I’d planned to spend so I called another electric company whose bid matched theirs but they weren’t as experienced in installing lights for curio cabinets. I’m so very glad I went with McKam.

I called McKam Electric about 3-4 years ago because a yoga friend recommended them to me. I couldn't be more pleased. They were professional, extremely knowledgeable, honest and fair in pricing. I recommended them to my entire townhouse community for upgrading the aluminum wiring connections that were required for insurance purposes and they have been wonderful. I just had a GFCI outlet go bad and they were able to come the same day and fix it right then. If I could give them 10 stars I would!! They are just great !! Update 2026... About a year after the above review, I needed to have a ceiling fan installed. I called Mike Johnson since he's the one I'd worked with previously. No one answered so I left a message. Over a week later I still had no returned call so I tried again. I reached the current owner and was told that Mike and James no longer worked there. The owner of the company was not very responsive to my need and said he didn't like the way Mike and James ran the company so he took it back. Pricing was higher and I felt the previous personalized warm service no longer existed. Without Mike and James the company is no longer the same and not one I choose to do business with. IMHO it was a big mistake to let them go. Based on my experience of 2 years ago, 2 stars is what I'd currently give the company. I haven't contacted them since then. Update 4/8/2026 I just received a message from Mike in response to my updated review telling me he is back at McKam Electric. I am extremely pleased to hear this and will be calling them again for my electrical needs. Assuming he is still there next time and is as good as before my rating is back to 5:stars. Glad to know you're back Mike!
